Job Title Academic Advisor
Nature of Work The Crawford High School Upward Bound Academic Advisor will advise participants attending Crawford High School regarding academic choices, monitor student performance and progress towards successful completion of high school program. The Academic Advisor is responsible for designing, supervising and updating Individualized Education Plans with each participant, and coordinating necessary tutoring. The Academic Advisor will assist with participant selection, maintain records on program services, evaluate all activities and prepare written reports.
Examples of Work Performed Essential Duties:
1. Assist with distribution of program information and participant selection
a. Conduct workshops and information sessions for students, parents, teachers, counselors and administrators and inform them of program services/activities, objectives and eligibility criteria
b. Accept referrals from counselors, teachers and community agency personnel
c. Meet with each applicant to discuss student's reason for applying, interests and attitudes toward education and career goals
d. Review applications, confer with the Director and school counselors/teachers and compile a final roster of accepted students and alternates along with the rationale for accepting each
2. Provide program services to participants
a. Provide academic support to program participants to deal with immediate problems and overcome academic deficiencies
b. Monitor participant progress and coordinate tutoring curriculum for each participant
c. Conduct individualized sessions to help participants overcome problems affecting performance and retention
d. Provide academic advising in the areas of long range academic and career planning, class selection, resolution of academic problems, preparation for high school
e. Counsels UB students regarding realistic college choices and assists them in gaining admission and obtaining financial aid or other needed services
f. Conduct periodic group meetings for all program participants
g. Along with the Director and teachers from the school, finalize a Summer curriculum, identify student needs, develop a Summer Individualized Education Plan and assist with the 6-week Summer program
h. Participate in college campus tours
Secondary Duties:
1. Gather and process participant information
2. Assists with the APR, Annual Performance Report
3. Contributes in hiring teachers for summer residential program; interviews and recommends final selection
4. Occasional travel and driving during the academic year. Extensive travel and driving during the UB summer program and trip
5. Contribute to teaching responsibilities during summer program
6. Other duties as assigned by Project Director
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree
Preferred Qualifications Master's degree
Experience working with disadvantaged populations and youth counseling/advising
Knowledge of teaching, training, counseling, management and college advisement
Must have strong organizational, planning, leadership and human relation skills
Experience in documentation of services, budget management, database/word processing skills and handling multiple confidential files
Physical Demands The physical requirements for this position may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the ability to use a computer, calculator, telephone, keyboard, and/or various types of office equipment. Must be able to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats and satisfactorily perform the functions of this position.
License and Certification Requirements Valid driver's license
