About the opportunity:

SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for an Architectural Historian Intern to join our Sacramento office for the summer of 2025 (approximately June 2 to August 15, 2025). SWCA offers an exciting opportunity to work with architectural historian activities within Northern California. This Sacramento- based internship pays $20.35/hour.

 

Your role would be to assist primarily with fieldwork and research, with opportunities for office work. Work under this internship will be conducted for a variety of state and local, energy transmission, transportation, and land development projects. Activities could focus on reconnaissance and intensive architectural resources surveys; historic research; learning to write architectural descriptions; helping to research and prepare historic context documents or other historical resources technical reports; and assisting with historic building condition assessments and/or preservation plans. Minimal regional overnight travel may be required.

What you will accomplish:

Interns will receive:

 

  • Hands-on experience with a diversity of architectural historian reports and research activities.
  • Understanding the significance criteria for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
  • Introduction to the California Environmental Quality Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Exposure to a nationally recognized cultural compliance consulting firm and lead professionals in the field.
Experience and qualifications for success:

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, pursuing a college degree with a focus on cultural resources, public history, architectural history, historic preservation, preservation planning, heritage conservation or closely related field, or a recent graduate within 12 months of September 1, 2024. Ph.D. candidates are not eligible through this program.
  • Must have completed 60 credit hours by June 2, 2025. 
  • Strong skills using the suite of Microsoft Office products.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Strong desire to learn, work in teams, take on diverse tasks.
  • Enrolled in a MS program.
  • Experience with historic research.
  • Experience with regulatory frameworks (CEQA, National Register of Historic Places)
  • Ability to start part-time as soon as is reasonable and transition to full-time on June 3 (helpful).

 

Additional Information:

 

  • Current valid driver’s license required
  • This internship will be full-time for the summer 2025 (June 2 to August 15). Ability to work after August 15 will be considered.
  • Ability to work a varying schedule.
