The Honolulu Zoo Society (HZS) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that partners with the Honolulu Zoo and its mission to inspire the public about the importance of wildlife and conservation issues. The Honolulu Zoo Society seeks a positive and enthusiastic person to join our team. The Director of Education will collaborate with the education staff to actively advance the Honolulu Zoo Society's mission of "Conservation through Education." The Director of Education is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Honolulu Zoo Society’s Education Department. This position encompasses the administration of camps, developing, implementing, and evaluating all Honolulu Zoo Society youth and public programs, maintaining education facilities and supplies, and actively participating in special events. This role is for a professional committed to fostering wildlife education and inspiring a vibrant learning environment at the Honolulu Zoo Society. Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Design and implement programs and experiences that increase community awareness, understanding, and participation in the Honolulu Zoo's wildlife and conservation mission. Implement current and new educational programs, including Zoo Camp, Twilight Tours, Morning Safari, Zoo to You, and future initiatives. Manage the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of full-time and seasonal staff for HZS education programs. Develop program and curriculum assessments and formulate effective program evaluation strategies that support the organization's strategic objectives. Ensure all programs align with state curriculum guidelines and national Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), when applicable, and with the Honolulu Zoo’s mission and conservation initiatives. Collaborate with HZS personnel, Honolulu Zoo staff, and internal and external community partners to develop and coordinate promotions, community events, and conservation initiatives. Maintain an inventory of supplies for all HZS programs, including camp materials, staff uniforms, tour devices, and supplies. Provide periodic reports summarizing program activities, impacts, and outcomes. Utilize teaching resources from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, San Diego Zoo Global Academy, and other platforms. Monitor and update relevant programmatic content on the HZS website. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to effectively organize work, manage time, prioritize tasks, and follow written and oral directions without supervision. Experience teaching and working with children, and an ability to work with varying ages. Public speaking skills sufficient to deliver staff training and presentations for various stakeholders. Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, and individuals. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to use discretion with confidential and sensitive matters. Knowledge of computer software: Microsoft (Teams, OneNote, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.), Windows, desktop publishing programs, and other database systems, including Blackbaud. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Must be able to work extended hours in natural elements (sun, rain, wind) and carry up to 25 pounds of weight. Driver's license preferred. Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in education, environmental sciences, natural resource management, biology, sustainability, zoology, or a closely related discipline. At least 3 years of professional experience in educational program management, program delivery, and curriculum development for various audiences, including informal education such as a zoo, aquarium, or museum. Complete a state and federal background check along with a drug screening. Provide a TB current check within the past year. (Must be done annually) To Apply: Please do not call.
