Position Summary

The Department of Neurosurgery at Boston Medical Center is a full-service clinical and academic program that provides advanced treatment for patients with a broad spectrum of diseases and disorders of the brain, nerves, spine and spinal cord. Our team includes highly experienced neurosurgeons who subspecialize in all major areas of neurosurgery. We also have multidisciplinary programs in trauma, neuro-oncology, and cerebrovascular disease that provide our patients with a broad spectrum of treatment options. We work with our colleagues to provide our patients with the highest level care in a truly compassionate environment.

The Nurse Practitioner hired for this role will perform clinical duties under the general supervision of a physician and report to the Chief Physician Assistant and the Administrative Director in the Department of Neurosurgery. The candidate will be responsible for providing outpatient clinical care in support of the overall Neurosurgery practice.

This role will be structured with primary focus on outpatient activities. Responsibilities will include shared clinics with neurosurgery physicians and eventually some clinics where the candidate will function as an independent practitioner seeing ambulatory (primarily established) patients and post-operative patients. Responsibilities also include schedule and patient panel management. The candidate will also be expected to train on inpatient activities and round with the Neurosurgical service on a rare but as needed basis.

General Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Obtaining complete medical history and performing a physical examination.
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies.
  • Formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient care and makes necessary revisions in care plan.Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects cost effective management of time, available human resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs physical examinations within prescribed guidelines and appropriate to patient needs.
  • Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.
  • Prescribing and/or dispensing medication.
  • Assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures.
  • Rounding on admitted patients.
  • Counseling patients and families, and other patient care duties.
  • May be involved with a patient's medical care in any role which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Physician Assistant's training, knowledge, skill, and experience.
  • Expert clinical judgment and ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in an expanded role.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with the various members of the health care team, patients and families.
  • Computer proficiency inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information required.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with the practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Full command (verbal and written) of the English language.

Prior experience in similar clinical setting/specialty is preferred. Successful candidates will be self-directed, demonstrate initiative and professionalism, and exercise expert clinical judgment to function independently in this role. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English are required in order to communicate complex medical information to collaborators such as patients and their families, physicians, staff, and community health workers. Nurse Practitioners who have exceptional problem solving and conflict resolution skills are preferred. Job Requirements

Qualified Nurse Practitioners will:

  • Hold Master's degree in nursing
  • Have current license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded
  • Be registered with the ANCC or other accrediting organization for Nurse Practitioners

Candidates Will Have

  • A Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration
  • A Federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • Current BLS and ACLS Certification.
  • A minimum of three years of current clinical experience required.
  • Prior experience in similar clinical setting/specialty preferred.
