Job Description

Overview:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Kitchen Assistant at the YMCA of Northern Utah maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families. Responsibilities include supporting the Kitchen manager in the development of a healthy weekly menu that caters to campers and staff with dietary restrictions. Under the direction of the Kitchen manager, the Kitchen assistant help to prepare, cook, and provide all meals for the camper and staff. The Kitchen assistant works in conjunction with the camp dishwasher to ensure the kitchen is up to the health department’s code of compliance by maintaining a safe and clean work area . This is a seasonal position.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Kitchen Manager in preparing all meals during the camp session
  • Support the Kitchen Manager as needed in the development and implementation of a healthy menu that caters to the needs of campers and staff
  • Works with the dishwasher to maintain cleanliness in the kitchen
  • Ensure food is labeled and disposed of in accordance with food safety standards
  • Ensure staff serving meals are aware of the campers and staff with dietary needs  
  • Maintains the health departments requirements to ensure a safe and clean area
  • Organize food orders in the pantry, fridge and freezer
  • Role model Camp’s professional standards
  • Participate and contribute to Staff meetings
  • Create a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth and staff; models relationship-building skills in all interactions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred
  • Meets minimum age standards as established by state law and/or the Y  
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required; will be provided in training if candidate does not have current certification  
  • Must obtain Serve Safe certificate prior to first day of work  
  • Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently
  • Knowledge of and experience in food service preferred: ordering, inventory, budgeting, food preparation, family-style serving, buffet serving, cleaning, and institutional kitchen equipment  
  • Experience in preparation of special dietary foods preferred
  • Knowledge in safe and proper use of kitchen equipment
  • Positive attitude and ability to build a cohesive team
  • Previous experience working with children and staff in a camp setting preferred
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
